The Sedona Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau has worked diligently alongside Keep Sedona Beautiful, Inc., Sustainability Alliance, City of Sedona Government, and Sedona Compost on a Straw Free Sedona campaign. The campaign encourages local businesses and their customers to eliminate usage of single-use plastic straws, and officially launched on August 31, 2018! There are currently 29 Sedona businesses that have taken the Straw Free Sedona pledge and will provide — upon request only — paper straws, which offer a more environmentally friendly alternative than plastic.

“Sedona Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau has launched Straw Free Sedona, a campaign that encourages local businesses and their patrons to cease use of single-use plastic straws. Research indicates that many of the 500 million plastic straws used each day in the U.S. end up in the oceans, where they pollute the water and kill marine life. To help reduce these devastating effects, Straw Free Sedona invites businesses to pledge that they will refuse to provide single-use plastic straws and instead offer paper straws only upon customer request.” – Jennifer Wesselhoff, Sedona Chamber of Commerce President/CEO

Straw-Free SedonaStraw Free Sedona is a response to the critical level of plastic that currently lives in our oceans. Every single minute, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is dumped into our oceans — that’s about 8 million metric tons of garbage each year. It’s estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish! Many marine creatures can’t tell the difference between common plastic items and food — they end up starving to death because they can’t digest the plastic and it fills up their stomachs, preventing them from eating actual food. Tragically, many sea creatures become trapped inside plastic six-pack dividers and other items, becoming severely deformed as they grow. Plastic straws are one of the top ten offenders found along the shores of our beaches and coastlines. Sadly, their use is usually unnecessary. Sedona now joins the global initiative to drastically reduce the use of single-use plastic straws.

Straw Free Sedona recognizes that children, people who have suffered a stroke, and others who live with debilitating physical conditions may require straws to consume liquids. Businesses taking part in the Straw Free Sedona initiative will provide paper straws upon request to all guests. (Paper is considered a more environmentally friendly alternative, as there is currently no industrial compost facility near Sedona to properly break down compostable straws.)

“This campaign is a great step towards Sedona becoming a leader of environmental responsibility and demonstrates the willingness of our local business owners to prioritize sustainability.” -Kathleen Ventura, Co-Founder/Owner of Sedona Compost
